ACCESO INTERNATIONAL’S FOUNDER DR. CHRISTINE GERVAIS

Dr. Christine Gervais is a mother, spouse, professor, researcher, human rights activist and humanitarian. She obtained an honours degree in Criminology in 1993 and a Master of Arts in Criminology in 1994 from the University of Ottawa. She completed a Ph.D. in Sociology in 2002 at Carleton University. Since 1995, she has worked as an Assistant Professor in Criminology at the University of Ottawa and as a Lecturer in Sociology at Carleton University. Her teaching and research areas include human rights violations, repressive legislation, abuses of torture and rape, development and social justice, human trafficking, gender and racial inequalities, crime prevention, reconciliation, as well as development and legal reforms in Latin America. In addition to lecturing, she does public speaking on human rights, development and education, women’s rights, adoption, solidarity and spirituality.

During her undergraduate program, she was awarded merit scholarships annually from the University of Ottawa and was part of the Parliamentary Page Programme in the House of Commons. For her master’s program, she received a graduate scholarship from the University of Ottawa and was awarded the Ontario Graduate Scholarship. For her doctoral studies, she was awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Fellowship, an Ontario Graduate Scholarship and a Graduate Scholarship from Carleton University. Christine founded Acceso International to demonstrate her profound gratitude for the financial support that she received throughout her post-secondary education.
