COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Guardian Angels Elementary School
Stittsville, Ontario

Acceso International offers a valuable opportunity for Canadian pre-school, primary, secondary and post-secondary level institutions to establish relations with a counterpart school in various countries. This initiative involves not only a gratifying sponsorship program, but also a uniquely rewarding chance for social and cultural enhancement that is made possible through the exchange of correspondence (photos, cards and letters) between the staff and students of the paired schools. Canadian schools that have been involved with this program include Holy Spirit and Guardian Angels Schools in Ottawa, Sainte-Marguerite Bourgeoys and St. John’s College in Brantford, Our Lady of Grace in Westmeath, St. Francis Xavier in Brockville, and École élémentaire Jeanne Lajoie in Pembroke. Other schools which have supported our initiatives include the K.E.Y. Clubs from Sir Robert Borden High School and Lisgar Collegiate Institute in Ottawa, as well as the Champlain College Charity Club in St. Lambert.

Penpal Project

Based on an open and profound dialogue with the participants in the human rights workshops for women in Honduras, Acceso International initiated a pen-pal exchange among the workshop participants and our volunteers. The communications have been mutually supportive and enhancing for all the women. The letters are filled with words of inspiration, sisterhood, friendship, solidarity, support, admiration and shared dreams. This project is made possible by the dedication of volunteers who coordinate the assignments between pen-pals, translations and mailings of the letters.

Amigos Club

Acceso International’s AMIGOS Club educates Canadian children, aged 4-12, about the cultures and conditions of children throughout the world, and especially in Latin America and the Caribbean. All children are welcome to join the AMIGOS Club to enjoy an atmosphere of international friendship, education and fun; events are held in community centres in Ottawa. Activities include crafts, music, art, dancing, Spanish lessons, games, story-telling, snacks, colouring, circles of friendship and the preparation of ethnic food & drinks. Additional educational benefits include lessons in geography, language and cultural history. Participants also help to prepare gifts of school supplies for fellow children in need of educational support. AMIGOS Club members learn to become informed contributors to their global community.
