Since 2003, Acceso International has been providing “back to school” educational supplies for children and youth from low income immigrant and refugee families in the Ottawa area. The project is entitled “Solidarity with Students: Making Education More Accessible for New Canadians”. By offsetting the expenses of school supplies, this project helps New Canadian students from low-income families to participate in, and benefit more fully from, their classes and homework. Each August, grade-appropriate kits are distributed to students to help prepare them for the coming academic year. Gifts of supplies, packsacks and shoes allow the children and youth to attend school with greater dignity and confidence, and to experience greater social inclusion within the school environment. Over 350 students have been assisted through this project.
“I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of Acceso International volunteers who have made this project possible. As Canadians we take our access to education for granted, yet still many families cannot afford school supplies and books. As a result, many of these families are in need of school supplies, not because we lack in access to the abundance of supplies, but low-income families have very little financial stability and security. Acceso International has recognized this need and for its efforts, we are grateful.” Project Coordinator
“Very helpful and timely. Our family appreciates this gesture of goodwill.” Feedback from a Project Recipient
“I work with lots of immigrants and newcomers whose financial capacity is limited. A program like this is definitely very beneficial to address their needs.” Staff from Community Centre Partner
